I first became aware of herons showing up around me during a period of intense transition in my life, and find their symbology powerful.

In Ted Andrews' book, Animal Speak, he notes that herons represent "aggressive self-determination and self-reliance." The herons' legs are especially meaningful as "...symbols of balance, and they represent an ability to progress and evolve." Andrews goes on to say that "the long, thin legs of the heron reflect that you don't need great massive pillars to remain stable, but you must be able to stand on your own."

That the heron feeds or nurtures itself by standing in water is also significant. Through our willingness to dip below the surface of our own lives and explore what lies hidden there, we nurture ourselves emotionally and spiritually.

While we may resist wading in the "swamp of our soul" and not really want to go mucking about beneath the surface, I believe our willingness to do just that can reveal hidden treasures and support us in spreading our wings to soar.

The heron picture on this website portrays the heron looking forward to the future, in the act of spreading its wings. It is my desire that you use the inspiration of the heron to joyfully wade into your Self in exploration, dip below the surface to discover the hidden nuggets there and spread your wings to soar gracefully to new heights.
